Bakersfield Christian Valley Champs Defeats Fresno-Hoover! BCHS Wins D-3 Section Boys Basketball Title

The Bakersfield Christian Eagles Boys Basketball team defeated the Hoover Patriots from Fresno by a final score of 62-44 in the Division 3 Valley Championship Game at Selland Arena Friday afternoon. This is the school’s third Valley Championship of the 2019-2020 school year and first for BCHS Boys Varsity Basketball after losing the previous two years at SellandThe Eagles team came into the game losing only two games since the return of star player Ben Yurosek, who joined the team late after winning the state title for football in December. Hoover, who had just upset the second seed, Garces, was riding a win streak as they looked to continue their run against the Eagles. Early on Hoover took advantage of the Eagles, gaining a 15-10 lead after the first quarter. Ben Yurosek finished with all 10 points for the Eagles. Yurosek earned all 10 points within the first quarter, while Henderson followed suit with 10 more in the second quarter. BCHS still found itself behind with 27-26 at halftime. In the third quarter the Eagles dominated the Patriots. Led by BCHS guard Seth Marantos, the Eagles put on a run out and scored the Patriots 24-10 leading 50-37 at the end of the third quarterThe Eagles defense stepped up in the fourth quarter as they held on for a 62-44 win.  The Eagles finally broke the “Selland Curse” after winning for the first time in three years. The previous two years the Eagles lost to Kerman in 2018 and Foothill in 2019. The Eagles were awarded the fifth seed in the Division IV State Playoffs. They will host Montclair on March 3rd for a chance to continue to advance for the state title over the next two weeks of games.
